Problem:
Aker Solutions needed a long-lasting, low-maintenance access solution for the East Anglia THREE HVDC platform—part of a major offshore wind project in the UK sector. The platform required safe and corrosion-resistant materials for walkways and vertical access points. Traditional steel posed challenges related to weight, corrosion, and safety in wet and marine environments.
Task:
Our task was to supply non-metallic access components tailored to the project’s tight design tolerances and safety specifications. This included walkways, ladder access areas, and specific fastening solutions to suit narrow-profile grating and ladder rungs. The client required both standard and customized components that would integrate seamlessly with the HVDC platform’s layout and fabrication process.
Our solution:
We delivered Duragrid FRP Grating for the walkways—offering excellent strength-to-weight performance and long-term durability in offshore conditions. For tight installation areas, we supplied our GrateCraft fasteners, specially developed to securely fix narrow-profile grating. In addition, we provided anti-slip covers for ladder rungs to improve personnel safety during vertical access, particularly in wet or low-visibility conditions. All components were supplied in accordance with offshore installation and safety standards, and delivered to meet the fabrication schedule.
Result and impact:
The installed FRP solution enhanced overall platform safety, especially in vertical access zones where ladder rung grip is critical. The corrosion-free materials and custom fasteners reduced installation time and lowered long-term maintenance costs. These solutions supported Aker’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient offshore platforms within the renewable energy sector.
Experience and learning:
This project highlighted the increasing demand for custom-engineered composite solutions in offshore wind infrastructure. Close coordination with Aker’s design and procurement teams ensured precise fit and performance. The development and implementation of GrateCraft fasteners once again demonstrated the value of product innovation in addressing offshore installation constraints.
